Some businesses are built to make a living. First Choice Cleaning NI is being built to make a difference.
For more than 15 years, I've worked in the cleaning industry — managing teams, supervising contracts, and learning what separates great businesses from average ones. I always knew I wanted to start my own company, but I didn't want to build just another cleaning business. I wanted to build something with purpose.
Then one day, while I was at work with a worship song in my head, everything suddenly became clear. The vision wasn't just about cleaning. It was about creating opportunity.
Every day, walking through Belfast in the early hours of the morning, I see people sleeping in doorways, in the pouring rain, with nowhere safe to go. I see people who have lost hope, people battling addiction, trauma, or circumstances that many of us can barely imagine.
I've also seen incredible organisations doing vital work to provide emergency support, food, shelter, and care. Their work is invaluable. But I kept asking myself: what happens next? What happens after someone leaves the shelter? Who helps them find stable employment? Who helps them build confidence, develop workplace skills, save money, and move towards a permanent home?
That question became the foundation of this business.
I've experienced difficult times in my own life and came close to losing everything. I know what it feels like to struggle. I was fortunate to have people who believed in me and encouraged me to keep moving forward. Without that support, my life could have been very different.
Not everyone has someone to believe in them. I want First Choice Cleaning NI to be part of that support.
Our goal is simple: build an outstanding cleaning company that customers trust, while creating genuine opportunities for people who are ready to rebuild their lives.
As the business grows, we want to work alongside charities, churches, veterans' organisations, and community groups across Northern Ireland. Together, we hope to provide employment, practical training, mentoring, life skills, and support that helps people move towards independent living.
We also plan to establish an independent non-profit organisation, governed by a Board of Trustees, to ensure that charitable funds are managed transparently and invested where they can have the greatest impact. In time, we hope to create a structured training programme that prepares participants before they begin work and supports them throughout their journey — giving them recognised skills, confidence, and a pathway into long-term employment.
I know we won't solve homelessness. But if we can help one person every six months rebuild their life, then another, and another after that — those individual lives matter. If our example inspires other businesses to do something similar, the impact could reach far beyond our own company.
Every contract we win is more than another job. It's another opportunity to change someone's future.
